Obsolete
Dont waste your money now that Duet is available and its initial bugs have been worked out.
Duet makes all WiFi based external monitor apps obsolete. Duet uses the standard lightning cable as the external display connection between your Mac and iPad.
I used or rather have had Air Display and then Air Display 2 , iDisplay and other WiFi based external display apps for years. Air Display 2 is the best WiFi based iPad external monitor app, but even it was such a hassle with such poor performance and limited usability that I pretty much stopped using it. I have the latest AirPort Extreme AC router, an iPad Air 2 and MacBook retina all with AC wireless but even with the latest fastest WiFi, the limitations of a WiFi connection were always obvious.
Forget using WiFi based external display apps on the go... They dont work at all with most public WiFi for security reasons, and even amateur public WiFi where Air Display could work, the connection and WiFi display performance were so port as to be an exercise in self torture.
I always wished a wired solution would exist, and now it does. Some former Apple engineers figured out how to use the standard lightning cable as the external display connection. Their app Duet is the first iPad as external display app that "just works" anywhere, and performs almost as well as a dedicated external monitor.
Until other developers come up with equal or better apps that also use a lightning cable, Duet is the only external monitor app worth using.
